Sinharaja Forest belongs to the group of tropical rainforests. In the past the Sinharaja forest was spread over a large area. But today that situation has changed and it is stated that Sinharaja now exists in an area of 8664 hectares. That is, in an area of about 30 square miles. History tells us a lot about the Sinharaja forest. The fourteenth-century traveler Iban Battuta mentions that he went to Sri Pada through the Sinharaja forest. Also, James Emerson, who wrote a valuable book on Sri Lanka, has given information about the Sinharaja site.
But due to the ongoing deforestation, the Sinharaja forest has become very small.Sinharaja belongs to the Central Highlands. Several rivers start from the streams of Sinharaja. The Gin River is formed by a canal that starts in the south of the forest. Sinharaja Forest can be valued as a habitat for endemic animals and small creatures of Sri Lanka. There are three hundred and eighty four species of birds in our country, 142 of them can be seen in this forest. Also, twenty one species of birds endemic to Sri Lanka can be seen in this forest,19 of them have been identified as endemic to this forest. Of the 85 species of mammals living in Sri Lanka, 40 species live in Sinharaja. Also, there are about three hundred plants here and seventy percent of them are endemic to Sri Lanka. It is also estimated that there are 3360 endemic flowering plants in Sri Lanka, It has been found that there are 495 endemic flowering plants in the Sinharaja forest. Medicinal plants are also found in abundance in this forest.
In terms of climate, Sinharaja forest belongs to the rainfed areas of Sri Lanka. Sinharaja is indeed a valuable asset to Cyril. The Sinharaja Forest, a vast forest site, has become a small forest area due to human encroachment. All human beings should pay close attention to this. It is the duty of all of us Sri Lankans to protect this forest.
